This is a shame to see.
There are other indications as well. Comments at their support site. Speckled with the usual Apple fanboy barb.
It's not that we agree with the philosophy of Steve Gehrman's Path Finder in any way. It's because Steve is, out of the thousands of lowlifes we've encountered in our abortive trip through Apple country, the only - literally the only - programmer who is deserving of respect.
And again, not because we agree with his philosophy. Because we don't. It's not the Unix way of doing things. But because Steve seems to be an honest and thoroughly upstanding Mensch. To us he's most famous for his curt comment on the TN2034 scandal many long years ago when he wrote:
'Metadata sucks balls.'
For those who aren't familiar with the TN2034 scandal: the Apple fanboys, who kick and scream about TN2034 but claim it's not available so people can read it themselves - and yes this includes John Gruber - well here it is.
If that link doesn't work for you - Google in their infinite wisdom can't handle FTP much anymore - try another non-Chromium browser.
What is TN2034? TN2034 is an admonition, perhaps by Avie, that fanboys start accepting the fact they're part of a bigger world and start building their apps the Unix way so they communicate better.
And yes, the Apple world went nuts, and Apple withdrew TN2034.
And a lot of the whimpering defence of the fanboys had to do with the fact that their precious beige boxes - which crashed on command, doing nothing at all, yet were still heralded by the fanboys as user-friendly - used a lot of metadata to make things work.
Steve Gehrman's comment is a reaction to that.
We've mostly steered clear of criticising Steve Gehrman and his Path Finder because he seems to be about the only honest and reasonably sane person in that strange group.
But what's happened to Steve is not unique. We at Rixstep are hanging by a thread. Before us it was Dan Wood, and the people behind Konfabulator, and who knows how many others along with them. Apple never liked competition. If anyone comes along and finds a core niche Apple somehow forgot, finds a way to embed into the basic infrastructure of the Apple world, Apple will destroy them. Apple shoved Dan Wood out of the way with an app very much like his own. Apple kicked out Konfabulator by creating Dashboard. They're not nice people at Apple. It's true that Microsoft's no better, but two wrongs do not a right make, and the people at Apple are pure bastards.
We'll have more to write about Steve Gehrman in the future.
